High Performance

Boulder Lab athlete Claire Cheffings at the 2022 IFSC Youth World Championships in Dallas, Texas.

Performance has always been one of the core principles at Boulder Lab, and is a fundamental driver for excellence in what we do across our coaching programs. With a deep rooted history in Australia’s young climbing scene, it’s our mission to improve at every avenue to promote and push sport climbing.

Leading Australia’s climbing scene

Our High Performance program is dedicated to building the next generation of Australia's best climbers.

It is a competitive climbing team focused on growth and mastery of the climbing acumen to perform at the highest levels, with the goal of performing at sanctioned events. Athletes are required to be highly motivated, disciplined and hard-working. They continue to train fundamental climbing skills, as well as focus on strength and conditioning, competition strategy, mobility, mindset and injury prevention.

Current and past program athletes include state team members to world cup athletes.

From pathways to high performance

From our grassroots programs, there are a series of pathways for young climbers to take and progress through. Climbers may start in programs such as the Mini/Super Monkeys or Youth Squad groups, and progress through our foundational pathway or switch over to our competition pathway.

Competitive Pathway Groups:

  • Our first introduction to competitive climbing begins here - climbers that are exceptionally motivated from our Mini/Super Monkeys program will progress to the U12s Competition Squad. Here young climbers will begin to train fundamental concepts for competitive climbing, learning the basics of competition skills, mindset and preparation.

  • Our climbers that exceed the environments afforded to them in smaller spaces from the U12s competition squad will progress to more adult-sized climbing in the Youth Competition Squad. Here they will continue to hone their skills and start to understand high performance behaviours and more advanced skills.

  • Athletes in this squad are well rounded, motivated and disciplined. With a demonstrated history of competition climbing and structured learning, we expect climbers to have a high degree of self reliance and intrinsically-driven learning in this squad. These climbers are striving for performance at the national level and consistently training throughout the week with and without their coaches.

  • The tip of the spear, athletes in this group have excellent experience in the climbing scene and are pushing their abilities at the international level.
