FAQs

  • Bouldering is climbing that is done on shorter walls, without the use of ropes. There are large, soft crash mats covering the ground that will absorb your fall.

    Boulders are divided into individual climbs or 'problems' that require a combination of problem solving, technique and strength to complete.

  • We welcome anyone and everyone to come and give it a try! Whilst it may look a little intimidating at first, bouldering is very accessible and easy to get into. If you can climb a ladder, there are boulders you can climb!

    Ferntree Gully and Brunswick have an age limit of 12+, whilst Clayton has an area that can accommodate for 5+.

  • In order to boulder at the Lab, you'll need a pair of climbing shoes. You can either bring your own, or rent some of ours. We also highly recommend using chalk to help keep your hands dry. Otherwise, just bring some comfy attire that you're happy to exercise in.

  • Yes,

    Bouldering for youth at BoulderLab is limited to ages 12 and over (Kinderlab at the Clayton facility caters for u12’s).

    Climbers 14 and over can climb without parental supervision, whilst climbers aged 12/13 will require parental supervision.

    NOTE* all Youth & Elite Youth program members are exempt from this rule after a coach has approved their climbing.

  • Kinder Lab is a smaller bouldering area to let kids between 5 and 12 learn to boulder in a safe place that is designed just for them! We also run under 12’s youth programs out of this space.

  • Yes!

    We offer a range class from our beginner friendly Bachelors of Bouldering, to advanced technique and strength classes, through to our youth-specific programs from very beginners to some of Australia’s best. Click on the classes tab at the top of the page for more information.

  • Bookings are not generally required, feel free to come down and visit us anytime! However, if you have a group of 10 or above please see the ‘group bookings’ tab on our website for more information

  • Yes, all participants must sign a facility waiver before any climbing can commence (or for those under 18 a legal guardian must fill in the waiver for them).

    To save time we highly recommend that you complete your waiver before visiting the Lab for the first time.

    Any spectators who aren't climbing are currently also required to fill in a waiver.

  • Whilst any sport has an element of risk, Bouldering included, we work hard to minimize that risk for all our climbers.

    We will cover all the safety aspects of bouldering in our Induction process, please remember to take care when climbing, make sure to only climb as high as you feel comfortable jumping from, Use the downclimbing holds, and look out for others.
