Located in Melbourne, Boulder Lab is fostering foundational climbing experiences for grassroots to elite athletes alike across three boulder gyms and the premier youth program in Australia.

We are seeking passionate and motivated individuals with a demonstrated history in climbing and leadership to meaningfully contribute to a fast-growing family of climbing and learning. We’re looking for coaches with patience, curiosity, empathy and knowledge to deliver and develop a culture of inclusivity, positivity and camaraderie. The ideal candidate will nurture and support young climbers in a training environment that is powerful in bringing Boulder Lab athletes to the forefront of the climbing scene and a lifelong love of climbing, with a balanced approach to trying hard and having fun.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Boulder Lab Coaches work alongside the Head Coach and the coaching team to develop, support and inspire a climbing team of youth athletes as well as the wider Team Boulder Lab community of athletes and families. Coaches are involved throughout the span of Boulder Lab programs and are connected with the entire Boulder Lab community and events including social and competitive events. A high degree of professionalism and coaching standards are expected.

Position Description

  • Act as a member of the Boulder Lab Coaching staff with a focus on foundational and/or competitive team programs

  • Coach Boulder Lab practices, training sessions, training camps and competitions in accordance with Boulder Lab coaching philosophies and protocols

  • Promote Boulder Lab standards and procedures in accordance with Boulder Lab guidelines

  • Coordinate with Head Coach and collaborate with co-coaches to optimise, innovate and implement Boulder Lab program schedules, curriculums, training plans and goals

  • Contribute to consistent Boulder Lab athlete / parent communication

  • Has a complete understanding of the Boulder Lab program progression – clearly communicating current and future Boulder Lab program options

  • Represent the Boulder Lab organisation as a responsible steward of youth climbing

  • Research and convey past, present and future industry youth studies / trends related to physical, mental and social health and well being

Skills we’re looking for:

  • Previous climbing coaching experience (desired but not necessary)

  • Passion for sharing experiences and knowledge while organizing around youth climbers

  • Confident and strong collaborator with the ability to coordinate with a robust coaching staff

  • Real-time problem solver handling challenging situations with sound judgment

  • Assess and educate injury prevention and risks related to indoor and competitive climbing

  • Effectively ‘read’ and communicate modern climbing movements, skills and techniques specific to high level competitive climbing

  • Individual, small and large group coordination and training experience in a practice and competition setting

  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive space for all races, religious beliefs, sexual orientations and identities 

  • Current WWCC check

  • Current First Aid training

Requirements:

  • Excellent leadership, communication, collaboration and technical coaching skills

  • Punctual, passionate and proud of your work with the drive to develop professionally

  • Strong collaborator eager to contribute to a robust team program of coaches and athletes

  • Understanding of digital collaborative platforms including Google Workspace

  • Flexibility to work weekday evenings along with various weekends around events and training camps

  • Passionate, enthusiastic and amicable while responsibly and effectively balancing coach, athlete and parent rapport

  • Convey climbing movement, technique and coordination along with strategic, physical and mental processes

  • Effectively balance individual and team development on and off the field of play
